In light of mounting defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), governors under the PDP banner are expected to convene in Abuja this Sunday to deliberate on the party’s future strategy.
The PDP has experienced significant instability in the last two weeks as a growing number of its members have crossed over to the ruling APC.
A major blow came on April 23, when Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, along with the state’s full PDP leadership, defected to the APC.
This mass defection occurred shortly after PDP governors gathered in Ibadan, where they expressed interest in forming new alliances ahead of the 2027 elections but distanced themselves from an opposition merger reportedly led by former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.
Adding to the party’s woes, all PDP senators from Kebbi State are also reportedly preparing to jump ship to the APC.
Sources familiar with the situation disclosed that barring any late changes, the meeting is scheduled for the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
Discussions are also expected to touch on matters related to the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, planned for May 27.
