The Nigeria Police Force has freed human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, from detention, two days after his arrest sparked widespread condemnation.
Sowore, who was detained in Abuja on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, was accused by the police of alleged cyberbullying and forging of police document published online.
His detention immediately drew criticism from rights groups, opposition figures, and civic organisations, who described the move as an attempt to silence dissent.
Public pressure had mounted on the police in the past 48 hours, with hashtags demanding Sowore’s freedom trending on social media and several civil society organisations threatening protests.
Amnesty International Nigeria had also called for his unconditional release, insisting that his arrest violated his fundamental rights.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been a vocal critic of successive Nigerian governments.
In 2019, he was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the “#RevolutionNow” protests, spending months in detention before securing bail.
