Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and prominent activist, has alleged that he was brutally assaulted while being held in police custody.
Reports had earlier emerged that Sowore was detained in Abuja on Wednesday after being invited by the Nigeria Police Force for questioning.
His arrest followed a petition reportedly submitted by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
However, in a fresh development posted on his verified X (Twitter) account, Sowore claimed he was attacked inside his detention cell early Thursday morning.
According to his statement, a team of police officers stormed the cell around 6 a.m., during which he sustained a fracture to his right hand. He also alleged that he was forcefully taken from the facility to an undisclosed location without explanation.
"The police broke into my detention room, assaulted me, fractured my hand, and moved me to an unknown location," Sowore stated.
He further claimed that the operation was carried out under the supervision of a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) attached to the Inspector-General's Monitoring Unit.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official response to the allegations. The circumstances surrounding the assault and the activist's current whereabouts remain unclear.
Sowore, a journalist and rights campaigner, has faced multiple arrests in the past over his involvement in protests and advocacy for social justice.
His supporters and Amnesty International have since taken to social media demanding his immediate release and accountability for those involved in the alleged attack.
