Fresh Cholera Outbreak Claims 58 Residents in Bauchi

No fewer than fifty eight (58) people have lost their lives in Bauchi State following a fresh outbreak of cholera, with health authorities also recording 258 new infections across 14 local government areas.

The state government confirmed the figures on Thursday during the inauguration of two special response committees to tackle the recurring health crisis. 

Officials warned that the latest outbreak again highlights the gaps in water supply, sanitation, and hygiene across communities.

Deputy Governor Auwal Mohammed Jatau, who presided over the inauguration, expressed concern that the disease continues to ravage communities despite ongoing interventions.

“Cholera outbreaks should not be taking this kind of toll in our state. With timely action and stronger coordination, many of these deaths could have been prevented,” Jatau said.

He announced the creation of the State Cholera Steering Committee and the Technical Working Committee, which will coordinate response strategies and prevention measures. 

According to him, the committees will also align with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to strengthen surveillance and improve rapid response efforts.

Jatau added that the recurring outbreaks have not only taken lives but have also strained Bauchi’s health system and disrupted economic activities in affected communities.

“Cholera is still one of the biggest public health challenges we face,” he noted. 

“These committees will serve as the central body to drive both immediate response and long-term solutions that will safeguard our people.”

The deputy governor urged members of the committees to demonstrate commitment to their new assignments. 

He stressed that their inclusion was based on expertise and the need for proactive measures such as early detection and quick medical response.

Health experts in the state have also warned that without consistent investment in clean water supply and sanitation, cholera may continue to return each year, especially during the rainy season.

With Bauchi now among states battling fresh outbreaks, residents are being advised to prioritise hygiene practices, ensure safe water consumption, and seek medical help immediately at the onset of symptoms.
