It was a tragic event at a Lagos beach on Friday, September 19, 2025, after a University of Lagos (UNILAG) student drowned while attempting a backflip during an outing with friends.

According to eyewitness accounts shared on social media, the student, identified as Balogun Damilola, who was recently inaugurated as the President, Faculty of Education, was swept away by a strong wave moments after asking a friend to record his stunt. Despite frantic efforts, he could not be rescued.

Medical doctor and social media user, Dr. Farouk, who broke the news, revealed that the student’s body was later recovered on Saturday morning at Museyo Beach, Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres from where the incident occurred.

The heartbreaking news sparked widespread grief online, with fellow students and friends paying tribute to the late Damilola. One of his colleagues, Doyin Doski, described him as a lively personality and disclosed that Damilola had recently been elected President of his faculty, having previously served as Vice President.

“He was my roommate, always full of life. Just last year, he became VP, and now he was leading us as Faculty President. This is painful,”

Doski wrote in his tribute.

Damilola, fondly known among friends as Ayanfe Eledumare, is remembered as a vibrant young man with great promise. His sudden death has thrown the UNILAG community into mourning, with many students calling for increased safety awareness during beach outings.
