Immigration officials at the airport have reportedly seized the international passport of the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, preventing her from embarking on an overseas trip.
The lawmaker, who raised the alarm in a live broadcast on her Facebook page on Tuesday morning, alleged that the action was carried out on the directive of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
According to her, she had planned to travel out of the country for a short break following the celebration of her second year in office but was shocked to discover that her passport had once again been confiscated.
She said, “Having completed the celebration of my second year, I decided to take a week off and my passport is being withheld again. The same thing happened.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained that she had not committed any offence and that there was no court order authorising the seizure of her travel document.
“I have committed no offense and there is no order from the court to seize my passport and deny me travelling,” she stated.
She further alleged that a similar incident occurred in the past, during which she was informed that the instruction came from the Senate President.
“The last time it happened, the officer in charge told us that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, instructed them to withhold my passport and prevent me from travelling,” the senator claimed.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Immigration Service nor the office of the Senate President had responded to the allegation.
