BREAKING: Tinubu Decorates Disu as Acting IGP at State House

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja, marking a change in leadership within the Nigeria Police Force.

The brief ceremony took place shortly after his swearing-in at about 3pm and was attended by senior government officials and top security chiefs.

With the development, the 59-year-old officer assumes office as the 23rd head of the Nigeria Police Force, following his elevation by the President.

Disu arrived at the Presidential Villa minutes before the event for a closed-door meeting with the President ahead of the decoration, signalling the commencement of his responsibilities as acting police boss.

His appointment, approved on Tuesday, came after the resignation of the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, whose exit was confirmed by the Presidency the same day.

In a statement issued by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President accepted Egbetokun’s resignation after the former police chief cited pressing family matters in his letter.

Until his promotion, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, and had previously held key positions, including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. 

He also led the Intelligence Response Team, overseeing several major operations.

His appointment takes immediate effect but remains subject to confirmation by the Senate in line with provisions of the Police Act 2020, while the Nigeria Police Council is expected to deliberate on his nomination for substantive appointment.

Disu, a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, brings decades of policing experience to the role. 

His elevation comes weeks before his statutory retirement, even as the amended Police Act provides a fixed four-year tenure for Inspectors-General of Police.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included the immediate past Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, senior security officers, and members of Disu’s family.
