Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ex-National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and several chieftains of the African Democratic Congress were reportedly attacked by suspected gunmen in Edo State on Tuesday.
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Obi’s former campaign spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, disclosed the incident in a statement issued in Abuja.
According to the statement, the attack occurred during political activities linked to the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata as a member of the ADC.
“Peter Obi and the leadership of the ADC are under siege in Benin, Edo State. Armed individuals followed us from the ADC Secretariat to Chief Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
“They fired shots at the gate and damaged several vehicles in what appears to have been an attempt on our lives,” the statement read.
Photos and videos shared by Tanko showed vehicles with shattered windshields and the main gate of Odigie-Oyegun’s residence riddled with bullets, underscoring the severity of the assault.
The alleged attack has intensified concerns about political violence in the state, coming amid heightened tensions surrounding opposition activities and declarations.
Obi and the ADC officials were reportedly inspecting the damage to their vehicles and property after the incident.
The attack coincides with political unrest following the February 21 Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election.
ADC candidate Dr. Moses Paul and the Obidient Movement had on Monday rejected the election results, alleging widespread irregularities.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Christopher Maikalangu of the APC winner with 40,295 votes, while Paul scored 12,109 votes and the PDP candidate received 3,398 votes.
Paul’s statement accused INEC of manipulating results, suppressing voters, intimidating supporters, and allowing vote-buying in several wards, further fueling discontent among opposition figures.
