President Bola Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act 2026 into law, establishing a revised legal framework to guide Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the next general elections.
Presidential aides confirmed that the new legislation introduces amendments aimed at strengthening transparency, improving result management procedures, and clarifying the powers of election management bodies.
Furthermore, officials indicated that the law addresses operational gaps identified in previous election cycles.
Passage of the bill followed deliberations by the National Assembly, where lawmakers debated key provisions relating to electronic transmission of results, timelines for party primaries, and dispute resolution mechanisms.
Lawmakers had earlier assured that the reforms were designed to enhance public confidence in the electoral system.
According to the presidency, the signing ceremony took place at the State House. In remarks after signing the bill, the President said the amendments reflect the administration’s commitment to credible elections.
He said the reforms would “strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that the will of the people is respected at every stage of the electoral process.”
Moreover, government officials noted that the updated legal framework provides clearer operational guidelines for the Independent National Electoral Commission, particularly in the deployment of technology and management of post-election litigation.
They added that stakeholder consultations were considered during the legislative process.
Political analysts argue that the law is pivotal as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
However, some civil society organisations have called for strict implementation and oversight to ensure that the reforms translate into measurable improvements on election day.
