Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Tuesday appeared before the Kaduna State High Court for the continuation of his trial over alleged financial misconduct.
El-Rufai arrived at the court under tight security, with officials maintaining orderly supervision as proceedings resumed in the high-profile case.
The appearance followed his recent temporary release by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which granted him bail on compassionate grounds to attend the funeral of his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt.
Details of the bail conditions were not disclosed.
Reacting to the development, El-Rufai’s son, Bashir, criticised the anti-corruption agency on social media, describing his father’s detention as unlawful.
“My beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he wrote.
El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, faces charges of money laundering and financial impropriety, allegations his legal team has consistently denied.
The case had previously been adjourned to allow the hearing of pending applications, including his bail request, after El-Rufai pleaded not guilty during his arraignment.
