Four Dead, Several Injured While Jostling For Ramadan Alms in Katsina

No fewer than four people have died following a stampede during the distribution of Ramadan charity in Katsina, prompting a police investigation and renewed calls for stricter crowd control at public welfare events.

The tragic incident unfolded in the Kofar-Guga area of Katsina metropolis, where residents had gathered in large numbers to receive the annual Ramadan alms from a philanthropist. 

Authorities confirmed that the crowd surged uncontrollably, leading to chaos and multiple injuries.

According to the Katsina State Police Command, a distress alert was received late in the evening at the Central Police Station, reporting a dangerous overcrowding situation at a private residence in the neighbourhood.

Police spokesperson, DSP Aliyu Abubakar, said officers were immediately deployed to the scene to restore order and coordinate rescue efforts. 

“Our operatives responded swiftly after receiving information about the overcrowding. Victims were evacuated to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment,” he said.

However, despite emergency interventions, four of the injured victims later died at the hospital.

Moreover, several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Bello Shehu, described the development as deeply unfortunate. 

He expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and assured residents that a thorough inquiry has commenced to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal stampede.

“This is a painful loss for the affected families and the state at large. We are committed to reviewing the situation and putting safeguards in place to prevent a recurrence,” the commissioner said.

Furthermore, the police command has urged individuals and organisations planning public charity events, especially during Ramadan, to formally notify security agencies in advance. 

According to the command, prior communication will enable adequate security deployment, crowd management planning, and protection of lives and property.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with poorly coordinated aid distribution exercises, particularly during festive and religious seasons when turnout is often overwhelming.

Investigations into the Katsina Ramadan stampede are ongoing as authorities seek to strengthen safety protocols across the state.
