Man Kills Girlfriend Over Infidelity in Cross River

Residents of Nwang Village in the Ekajuk community, Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, have been thrown into shock following the alleged killing of a 26-year-old woman, Moshie Igu, by her boyfriend, Malime Ejor.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday around 6 a.m., has sparked outrage within the community, with residents demanding justice for the deceased.

Local sources told PUNCH Metro on Monday that the suspect, said to be about 35 years old, allegedly attacked the victim at a farm during a dispute believed to be linked to accusations of infidelity.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said efforts to save the victim were unsuccessful as the suspect had already inflicted fatal injuries before help could arrive.

“We heard loud noises and rushed to the scene, but by the time we got there, he was already attacking her with a machete,” the source said.

“There was nothing we could do at that point. It was after the attack that some youths managed to overpower him and hand him over to security operatives.”

It was gathered that the altercation between the couple escalated into violence following a heated argument over alleged unfaithfulness, leading to the tragic outcome.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the suspect had been taken into custody and that investigations were ongoing.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and a full investigation has commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

Eitokpah added that police operatives swiftly responded after receiving the report, arrested the suspect, and prevented him from being lynched by an angry mob.

“Upon receiving the report, our officers moved to the scene promptly. The suspect was apprehended and rescued from mob action. He remains in police custody for his safety while investigations continue,” he stated.

He further disclosed that arrangements were being finalised to deposit the victim’s remains at the General Hospital mortuary in Ogoja, while the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further handling.

The development comes weeks after a similar incident in IbadanOyo State, where a 29-year-old man, Quadri Mohammed, allegedly killed his 26-year-old girlfriend, Precious Mogaji.

The Police in Oyo had also launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding that case.
