The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority has launched a comprehensive enforcement operation in the Akobo Ojurin axis of Ibadan, targeting illegal street trading, unauthorised parking and a range of traffic violations.
The exercise, carried out on Thursday, February 26, 2026, forms part of a wider clean-up drive aimed at restoring order, easing congestion and ensuring strict compliance with environmental and traffic regulations in the area.
Speaking during the operation, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (Rtd), said the agency focused on roadside traders engaged in indiscriminate display of goods, activities obstructing vehicular and pedestrian movement, as well as motorists and commercial motorcycle operators violating traffic rules, including one-way driving and illegal parking.
According to him, such practices amount to environmental nuisance and pose serious safety risks to road users.
He explained that several strategic points within the Akobo Ojurin corridor were covered, with particular attention on traders, okada riders and motorists who flout established traffic laws.
Major Adesagba expressed concern over what he described as the persistent disregard for traffic regulations by some road users, warning that the authority would no longer tolerate actions capable of undermining public safety and public order.
He urged traders and motorists to comply with stipulated regulations or face the full weight of the law.
Residents and passersby commended the intervention, describing it as timely and necessary to reduce congestion and improve environmental sanitation in the area.
The enforcement drive was carried out in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps, Operation Burst and other security agencies.
In a related development, OYRTMA has concluded sensitisation campaigns on its QR Code Embedded Jacket Policy for commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators across key locations including Olodo, Wofun and Oki in Egbeda Local Government Area of Ibadan.
Major Adesagba disclosed that full enforcement of the policy will commence on March 2, 2026.
He said more than 10,000 QR code jackets have already been distributed free of charge to operators as part of efforts to encourage compliance.
The policy, introduced in November 2022, mandates all okada and maruwa operators to register under the state’s Residents’ Registration Scheme and wear QR code embedded jackets for proper identification.
The chairman noted that low compliance in the past has emboldened criminal elements and contributed to rising cases of motorcycle-related crimes.
He explained that the QR code system is designed to enhance traceability, strengthen security and protect both operators and passengers.
Also speaking, the General Manager of OYRTMA, Commander Adeoye Ayoade, said the policy is primarily aimed at safeguarding the lives of operators and residents.
He warned that defaulters would be barred from operating on Oyo State roads and cautioned riders against alcohol consumption while on duty.
The state government said the combined enforcement efforts reflect its broader commitment to creating a safe, orderly and conducive environment for residents and businesses across Oyo State.
