President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate suspension of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) cashless payment system following widespread disruption at the nation’s major airports.
The policy, launched on March 1, required passengers to use ‘Go Cashless’ cards or POS devices for entry gates, parking, and airport lounges.
The rollout led to heavy traffic congestion at key airports, including Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, leaving travelers stranded and causing numerous flight delays.
Aviation and Aerospace Minister, Festus Keyamo, told State House reporters that the President instructed FAAN and the aviation ministry to suspend the scheme immediately.
Tinubu also urged them to revisit the plan and come up with a more practical solution that ensures transparency in revenue collection while prioritizing passenger convenience.
