2027: Tinubu Plotting Sole Candidacy Like Abacha - Dele Momodu

 

Media mogul Dele Momodu has alleged that President Bola Tinubu and his allies are scheming to ensure he emerges as the sole candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

He drew a parallel with the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha, who made a similar attempt between 1993 and 1998.

 

Momodu made the allegation while reacting to the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission to de-recognise the African Democratic Congress leadership led by former Senate President David Mark.

The publisher and politician described INEC as a debilitating albatross on the country, accusing it of partisan conduct dating back to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

 

Writing on X, Momodu alleged that INEC’s swift recognition of the Wike faction of the Peoples Democratic Party confirmed what he described as the robotic nature of the electoral body.

He contrasted this with the commission’s apparent reluctance to act on factional disputes within the All Progressives Congress across several states.

Momodu warned that with governors across the country  were either coerced or persuaded into the ruling party, adding that the opposition was being systematically weakened ahead of 2027.

“The ultimate aim of Tinubu and his acolytes is to produce a sole candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The last time such a brazen attempt was made was during the Abacha era, 1993 to 1998,” he wrote.

He added that the de-recognition of the ADC left affected members with little option beyond the courts, though he described even that avenue as precarious.

Momodu, however, noted that the God factor remained the one variable beyond human manipulation, concluding that Nigerians rarely draw useful lessons from history.
