Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in the state, fuelling fresh speculation about a possible political realignment.
The meeting comes amid growing indications that the governor may be weighing options to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling APC ahead of forthcoming elections.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, one of the lawmakers, who declined to be named, said the gathering was convened at the instance of the governor to deliberate on recent political developments at both the national and state levels.
“We are here today as members of the National Assembly to meet with our governor and leader on a special invitation to discuss the ongoing political realignment in the country, particularly as it affects our state,” the lawmaker said.
He added that the discussions had yielded encouraging outcomes, noting that the lawmakers would soon make their position public.
“We have reached a positive understanding, and in no distant time, we will address the public to clarify the outcome of our deliberations,” he stated.
The development comes shortly after Mohammed and a senior figure in the PDP reportedly held talks with key stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress, further signalling possible shifts in political alliances.
Although the governor has yet to publicly confirm any defection plan, Thursday’s engagement has intensified talks of an imminent move that could reshape the political landscape in Bauchi State.
