The Independent National Electoral Commission has decided to delay the implementation of its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the conduct of the 2027 general election.
The decision was announced on Friday following a consultative meeting between the electoral commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners drawn from across the country.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, said the commission reviewed the proposed timeline for the exercise before reaching a consensus on the postponement.
He noted that the electoral body concluded that the voter revalidation process would be more appropriate after the next general election cycle has been completed.
“As a result of the deliberations held with Resident Electoral Commissioners, the commission has resolved to shift the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise to a period after the 2027 general election,” Haruna said.
The commission is expected to provide additional information regarding the exercise at a later time.
