Ondo Monarch Accused of Impregnating Woman, Forcing Her to Have Abortion

A 21-year-old woman from Ipele in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State has accused a traditional ruler in her community of impregnating her, coercing her into terminating the pregnancy, and subjecting her to threats and intimidation.

The woman, Ifemide Kehinde, made the allegations in an interview, where she described how what began as a relationship allegedly turned into a distressing ordeal.

According to Kehinde, the monarch whom she referred to as the Kabiyesi of her town had approached her with a proposal to become his second wife, an offer she said she initially accepted.

She claimed the relationship led to pregnancy, but alleged that the ruler insisted she terminate it under threat.

Kehinde said she reluctantly went through with the abortion and subsequently suffered complications, including prolonged bleeding and recurring pain.

“I didn’t want to go through with it, but I felt I had no choice at the time,” she said, adding that she struggled to access proper medical care and had to rely on her own limited resources.

She further alleged that the monarch did not provide direct support, instead sending money through intermediaries. According to her, the situation deteriorated afterwards, with claims of intimidation and attempts to silence her.

Kehinde also accused individuals she believes are linked to the ruler of harassing her, including through phone calls and messages. She said some of these interactions, along with other communications, have been documented as evidence.

In her account, she alleged that others familiar with the situation had corroborated aspects of her claims in recorded conversations, which she says she possesses.

The young woman also raised broader concerns, alleging a pattern of inappropriate behaviour involving other women, although these claims remain unverified.

She said she has submitted formal petitions to the Ondo State Police Command, the state government, and relevant authorities overseeing traditional institutions, but claims she is yet to see meaningful progress.

Kehinde expressed fears for her safety, alleging that threats against her have continued in recent weeks.

“I just want justice and to feel safe,” she said.

She added that police have begun making enquiries into the matter, including visits to locations she identified as relevant to the case.

When contacted for comment, the traditional ruler did not address the allegations directly and declined to provide further clarification.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
