Oyo Youths And The Need for Real Opportunities, Beyond Election Handouts — By Jesugbemi Olaniyan

In Oyo State, a growing number of young people are beginning to question a long-standing political culture that prioritizes short-term financial handouts over real development.

Across Ibadan and other parts of the state, it has become a familiar pattern. During election periods, youths are mobilized, small cash is shared, and temporary excitement fills the air. However, once the elections are over, many are left to face the same realities; unemployment, struggling businesses, and limited opportunities.

This recurring cycle has sparked conversations among youths who now say the focus must shift from quick money to sustainable growth.

For many, the real issues are clear. Thousands of graduates remain without jobs, small business owners continue to battle poor electricity and low support, while creatives, tech enthusiasts, and artisans struggle to access funding and platforms that can help them grow.

There is a rising demand for practical solutions, functional skill acquisition programmes, access to startup funding, improved infrastructure, and policies that genuinely support youth development. Many believe that with the right systems in place, Oyo State has the potential to become a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and talent development.

Beyond economic opportunities, youths are also calling for inclusion in governance. Rather than being seen only during campaigns, they want to be part of decision-making processes that shape their future.

The message from the streets is becoming clearer: young people are no longer satisfied with temporary relief. They are asking for leadership that prioritizes long-term impact and creates an enabling environment for growth.

As these conversations continue to gain attention, it remains to be seen whether this shift in mindset will influence political engagement and leadership decisions in Oyo State.
