Here are seven important things every Muslim should do on the Day of Arafah:
1. Observe Fasting
Fasting on the Day of Arafah is highly recommended for Muslims who are not performing Hajj.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.”
This fast is regarded as one of the greatest voluntary acts of worship in Islam. Nigerian Muslims are encouraged to prepare spiritually and physically to observe it sincerely for Allah’s sake.
2. Increase Supplications (Du’a)
The Day of Arafah is known as a day when prayers are greatly accepted.
The Prophet (SAW) said:
“The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah.”
Muslims should spend the day making heartfelt prayers for themselves, their families, Nigeria, and the Muslim Ummah. It is also a good time to pray for peace, financial stability, good health, and forgiveness.
3. Engage in Constant Dhikr
Remembering Allah through dhikr should be increased throughout the day.
Common phrases include:
* Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah)
* Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah)
* Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
* La ilaha illa Allah (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah)
One of the most recommended supplications for Arafah is:
“La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir.”
Meaning: There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.
4. Seek Forgiveness Sincerely
The Day of Arafah is a powerful moment for repentance and returning to Allah.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And seek Allah’s forgiveness. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
Muslims are encouraged to ask Allah for forgiveness sincerely, abandon sinful habits, and renew their commitment to righteousness.
5. Give Charity to the Needy
Helping the less privileged is another meaningful act during this sacred period.
In many parts of Nigeria, especially during Eid season, struggling families face economic hardship. Giving food, money, clothes, or support to widows, orphans, and vulnerable neighbours reflects the true spirit of Islam.
The Prophet (SAW) was known for his generosity, especially during blessed periods.
6. Recite and Reflect on the Qur’an
Muslims should dedicate time to reciting the Qur’an and reflecting on its meanings.
Allah says:
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright.”
Even if one cannot complete many chapters, reading and understanding a few verses with sincerity can bring immense reward and spiritual peace.
7. Avoid Sin and Reconcile With Others
The blessings of Arafah should not be mixed with sinful acts, hatred, or unresolved conflicts.
Muslims are encouraged to forgive others, settle disputes, avoid gossip, insults, and social media arguments, and embrace peace.
As Nigerians continue to face social and economic challenges, the Day of Arafah offers an opportunity for spiritual renewal, unity, and hope.
The Day of Arafah is a rare gift from Allah and one of the best days of the Islamic year. Whether at home, in the mosque, at work, or in school, every Muslim should strive to maximize the blessings of the day through fasting, prayer, repentance, charity, and remembrance of Allah.
