Abandoned Day Old Baby Found in Gombe Varsity Female Hostel

Authorities at Gombe State University have launched an investigation after a newborn baby was discovered inside a female hostel within the institution, raising concerns among students and residents.
The baby boy, believed to be barely a day old, was reportedly found abandoned on Friday, prompting an immediate response from the university management and health officials.
Confirming the development, the institution’s spokesperson, Napthali Hadu, described the incident as disturbing and contrary to the rules guiding student conduct within the university community.

According to him, the management has already begun efforts to identify those connected to the incident and determine how the newborn ended up inside the hostel facility.

“This is an unfortunate situation that has attracted serious attention from the university authorities.

"Necessary steps are being taken to uncover those involved and ensure appropriate action is taken,” he said.

Furthermore, the university assured students and members of the public that findings from the ongoing investigation would be communicated once inquiries are completed.

The infant was later transferred to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, for medical attention and proper care.

Meanwhile, access to the female hostel has reportedly been restricted as the institution intensifies investigations surrounding the incident.

The discovery has since generated conversations within the university community, with some students calling for stronger welfare and counselling structures to support students facing personal or emotional challenges.
