Governor Siminalayi Fubara has stepped down from contesting the forthcoming All Progressives Congress governorship primaries in Rivers State, announcing that he will instead align with the party’s eventual flagbearer in the interest of unity and political stability.
The governor made the announcement in a written statement on Wednesday, explaining that his decision came after what he described as careful reflection and wide-ranging consultations with close allies and stakeholders across different circles.
He noted that the realities of leadership often require difficult compromises, adding that safeguarding peace and cohesion in Rivers State outweighed personal political aspirations at this stage of the process.
Moreover, Fubara expressed appreciation to his political base for their loyalty and sustained backing throughout his governorship ambition, acknowledging the emotional and material investment made by his supporters.
He urged them to remain calm and continue supporting the broader vision of the party despite the development.
He also commended the leadership of the All Progressives Congress for the platform provided during the political process, while extending gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as encouragement and goodwill.
However, the governor was firm in clarifying that his withdrawal should not be misread as surrender or political fatigue, insisting it was a strategic and principled decision aimed at strengthening unity within the state.
