The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has reportedly screened out a number of aspirants seeking to contest in the party’s forthcoming primary elections.
The party has reportedly cleared only a select few to proceed ahead of the 2027 political contest in the state.
Among those reportedly disqualified are younger brother of former governor, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Ajimobi Wasiu, businessman and entrepreneur, Kola-Daisi, Faozey Oladotun, Ademola Wasiu Alli, Hussaini Yusuf, Hamed Afeez Repete, and retired Colonel Akinremi Alade.
Party sources disclosed that the screening exercise, which was conducted yesterday by the committee constituted by the national leadership of the APC, was aimed at assessing the eligibility, loyalty, and overall suitability of aspirants seeking to fly the party’s flag in future elections.
According to findings, the committee cleared a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Remi Oseni (Oyo South); Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central); and Professor Adeolu Akande, to participate in the next stage of the party’s internal process.
The development has already sparked intense reactions within the Oyo APC, with supporters of some of the affected aspirants expressing displeasure and frustration over what they described as selective treatment and an alleged attempt to impose preferred candidates ahead of the primaries.
Some party stakeholders who spoke to Westernmirror.com.ng on condition of anonymity maintained that the exercise was necessary to protect the integrity of the APC and ensure that only aspirants with proven commitment to the party’s ideals are allowed to contest.
A senior party chieftain noted that the screening committee considered factors including party loyalty, grassroots structure, previous contributions to the APC, and capacity to unite members ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“There were complaints and petitions against some aspirants. The committee reviewed all submissions carefully before arriving at its decisions.
“The goal is to strengthen the party and avoid avoidable crises before the primaries,” the source stated.
However, loyalists of the disqualified aspirants have faulted the outcome, insisting that the process lacked transparency and fairness.
Efforts to obtain official reactions from the state chapter of the APC were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report, while some of the affected aspirants were also yet to publicly respond to the reports surrounding their alleged disqualification.
