Atiku Tackles Tinubu Over Alleged Move Against Opposition Parties

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has criticised what he described as efforts to weaken political opposition in Nigeria, urging President Bola Tinubu to uphold democratic values and allow political parties to compete freely.

Atiku's reaction followed reports of a legal attempt aimed at deregistering the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a development he said raises concerns about the country's democratic space and the future of multiparty politics.

According to him, democratic governance thrives when citizens are presented with diverse political choices rather than restrictions that limit competition. 

He argued that any move perceived as targeting opposition platforms could undermine public trust in the electoral system.

Drawing comparisons with previous administrations, Atiku noted that former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari governed without pursuing the deregistration of opposition parties. 

He urged the current administration to follow the same path and protect the principles of political inclusion.

"A healthy democracy depends on open participation and fair competition among political parties," Atiku said. 

"Leaders who are confident in their performance should welcome electoral contests rather than be seen as limiting alternative voices."

Furthermore, he maintained that the strength of any democratic system lies in its ability to accommodate differing viewpoints and political interests. 

He warned that attempts to narrow the political field could generate concerns among voters and stakeholders ahead of future elections.

The former vice president also emphasised that public support is best earned through policies that enhance citizens' welfare, rather than through actions that may be perceived as reducing political rivalry.

His remarks have added to the growing debate over political freedoms and the role of opposition parties in Nigeria's democratic process, with observers closely watching developments surrounding the court action and its potential implications.
