TCN Announces Power Outage in Five States, Gives Reasons

Residents and businesses in several northern states are expected to experience temporary electricity disruptions as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) embarks on a major transmission infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving power supply reliability.

According to TCN, the planned outage will affect parts of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Yobe states. 

The disruption will also extend to Gazaoua, a border community in the Republic of Niger that receives electricity through Nigeria's transmission network.

The company explained that the interruption is necessary to allow engineers to carry out scheduled maintenance work at the Kumbotso 330kV transmission substation.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, who disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday, said the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the national grid and enhance service delivery to electricity consumers.

She noted that contractors working on the facility will continue the upgrade of critical transmission equipment, including the replacement of existing conductors with higher-capacity lines designed to improve power evacuation and network stability.

“The maintenance exercise is part of a broader plan to reinforce the transmission system and ensure that electricity can be delivered more efficiently across the affected regions,” Mbah said.

As a result of the work, some electricity distribution companies will temporarily be unable to receive bulk power from the transmission network for onward distribution to customers.

Areas served by Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) are expected to be among the hardest hit during the maintenance period. 

Parts of the networks covered by Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) will also experience interruptions.

A TCN official familiar with the project said the upgrade would significantly boost the capacity of the transmission infrastructure once completed.

“While customers may experience temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefit will be a stronger and more reliable electricity network capable of meeting growing demand,” the official said.

The affected locations include Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as Azare in Bauchi State and Nguru in Yobe State. 

Communities in Gazaoua, Niger Republic, connected to the Nigerian grid, will also be impacted during the maintenance window.

TCN urged customers in the affected areas to make adequate arrangements ahead of the scheduled work, assuring them that normal electricity supply would be restored immediately after the maintenance exercise is completed.
