The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, saying the suspect was apprehended after a complaint was lodged by a relative of the deceased.
According to the police, the incident occurred on May 28 when an argument between the suspect and his 65-year-old father reportedly degenerated into a physical confrontation.
The police said the elderly man sustained serious injuries during the incident and was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
However, he was later pronounced dead by doctors while receiving care, prompting the police to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following preliminary findings, operatives arrested the suspect and placed him in custody pending the conclusion of investigations.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, while the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed investigation,” the statement said.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, described the alleged act as disturbing and unacceptable. “No disagreement should degenerate into violence. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” he said, urging residents to embrace peaceful means of resolving conflicts.
