10 Killed, Six Injured as Bus Rams Into Truck on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Ten people have died, and six others were injured following a fatal road accident at the Saapade Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash, which involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus and a Sinotruk truck, occurred after the truck allegedly reversed on the highway, creating a dangerous obstruction for oncoming traffic.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that 18 people were involved in the accident. 

Those affected included 15 adult men, two adult women and a male child.

According to the agency, the death toll stood at 10, comprising nine adult men and one child. 

Six other passengers suffered varying injuries, while two men escaped without harm.

FRSC spokesperson Afolabi Odunsin said preliminary findings pointed to a combination of traffic violations that led to the tragedy.

“The evidence gathered at the scene indicates that excessive speed, unsafe overtaking and dangerous driving contributed significantly to the collision,” he said.

Officials explained that the truck driver reportedly attempted to reverse after missing a turn on the expressway. 

At the same time, the approaching bus, said to be travelling at high speed, tried to pass through the restricted space and collided with the truck.

“The circumstances surrounding this crash highlight the risks associated with reckless manoeuvres on major highways. 

"A single wrong decision can result in devastating consequences,” an FRSC official said.

Emergency responders from the corps arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and transported the injured victims to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment.

Meanwhile, the bodies of those who lost their lives were moved to the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.

Authorities also confirmed that officers from the Nigeria Police Force's Ishara Division have taken custody of the damaged vehicles pending further investigation and evacuation arrangements.

Reacting to the incident, Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a full recovery.

He also urged motorists, especially commercial transport operators and truck drivers, to avoid reversing on highways and to strictly observe traffic regulations.

“Drivers must understand that speeding, dangerous overtaking and illegal reversing can turn ordinary journeys into fatal incidents. 

"Compliance with road safety rules remains the most effective way to prevent avoidable deaths,” Ogunjobi said.

The FRSC further advised road users to maintain safe driving speeds and make use of approved turning points whenever they miss their routes, stressing that adherence to traffic rules remains critical to reducing accidents on Nigeria's highways.
