APC Mocks Opposition Over Failure to Meet INEC Nomination Deadline

The All Progressives Congress has criticised opposition political parties for failing to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission's deadline for the submission of candidates for the 2027 general elections, describing the development as evidence of their inability to govern.

The ruling party stated this in a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, after confirming that it had successfully uploaded the names of its presidential, vice-presidential, Senate and House of Representatives candidates to the INEC nomination portal before the deadline.

According to the APC, although INEC later extended the submission deadline from July 11 to July 14 following requests from opposition parties, the extension exposed what it described as the opposition's poor internal coordination.

The party argued that despite fielding fewer candidates than the APC, the opposition failed to conclude its nomination process within the stipulated time, raising concerns about its organisational capacity.

It maintained that political parties unable to effectively manage their internal affairs could not be trusted with the responsibility of governing the country or its sub-national governments.

The APC also accused opposition parties of hypocrisy, recalling previous allegations that the ruling party influenced decisions taken by INEC.

According to the party, the same opposition parties that accused the APC of controlling the electoral commission later sought and obtained an extension of the nomination deadline from the commission after failing to meet the original timeline.

The ruling party said its decision to complete the submission process ahead of the deadline demonstrated discipline, organisational strength and commitment to due process.

It called on its leaders, members and supporters to shift attention to preparations for the 2027 general elections by strengthening party structures, intensifying grassroots mobilisation and promoting the achievements of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

The APC added that it would focus on an issue-based campaign as it seeks a fresh mandate from Nigerians in the next general elections.
