The wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, has refuted reports alleging that she has filed for divorce from her husband, describing the claim as false and misleading.

In a statement posted on her verified X account on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said the report making the rounds on social media was untrue and urged members of the public to disregard it.
She stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation.”
Okwu-Kanu expressed disappointment over the circulation of unverified stories about her family, noting that the spread of false information undermines responsible journalism and misleads the public.
She urged the public to rely only on information released by her personally or through her authorised representatives, while appreciating those who contacted her to verify the claim before sharing it.
Kanu, whom she married in 2009, is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after he was convicted on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025.
The trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, found the IPOB leader guilty on seven counts and sentenced him to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years on one count and five years on another, with all the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
Kanu has since challenged the judgment, filing a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to have his conviction and sentence set aside.
