Obi Signed One-Term Presidency Agreement With Me, NDC – Kwankwaso

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has confirmed that the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, saying the arrangement was part of the party's power-sharing formula designed to return the presidency to the North after a single term.

The former Kano State governor expressed confidence that Obi would honour the agreement, describing him as a trustworthy partner.

According to him, both the party and the presidential ticket formalised the understanding through separate written agreements.

"We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us," Kwankwaso said.

He explained that the agreement provides that Obi would serve from 2027 to 2031 before power rotates to the North, adding that the arrangement was reached to promote fairness and national unity.

Kwankwaso said he accepted the vice-presidential position because both leaders agreed that the South should retain the presidency for only one term before the office returns to the North.

"We felt the presidency should remain in the South for four years before returning to the North. We believe that is the best way to strengthen national unity and move the country forward together," he stated.

Responding to questions about his own presidential ambition in 2031, Kwankwaso said the party's immediate priority was securing victory in the 2027 election, while long-term political plans would be pursued in due course.

Obi had earlier announced in May that he would serve only one term if elected president, saying the decision was intended to foster political stability and reinforce national cohesion.

The NDC has repeatedly defended its zoning arrangement, describing the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a consensus aimed at balancing the country's regional interests ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
