The phrase has dominated conversations across Nigeria’s entertainment industry in recent weeks after YCee used it while criticising what he described as the growing celebration of anti-intellectualism, referencing content creators such as Peller.

Since then, “Olodo Uprising” has become one of the country’s most talked about catchphrases.

Addressing the buzz on X, the rapper explained that the phrase had already been circulating on the platform long before he popularised it.

He tweeted on X on Tuesday, “Also, I didn’t coin the phrase ‘olodo uprising’; it’s been circulating on Twitter since last year.

“No, I’m not going to ‘trademark’ the phrase.

“No, I’m not going to ‘make a song’ about the phrase.

“No, I will not be making ‘merch’ centered around the phrase.”

YCee first used the expression during an appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, where he argued that Nigerian society was increasingly rewarding ignorance over intelligence. He also referred to what he called “Peller culture,” a remark that sparked widespread debate online and drew a response from the popular content creator.

The rapper later clarified that his comments were not aimed at content creators as a group or at any individual. In an interview with Cool FM Lagos, he said his remarks had been taken out of context and explained that he was discussing how some artistes now feel pressured to simplify their music to appeal to audiences they perceive as less interested in lyrical depth.
