The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with clear explanations over controversies surrounding his past, including issues relating to his educational records and alleged drug-trafficking claims.

Obi made the demand in a statement posted on his verified social media account on Monday, August 31, 2026, where he questioned the reported attempt to prevent records concerning the President from being disclosed in a foreign court.
The former Anambra State governor said matters concerning the background and records of a sitting President should not be shielded from legitimate scrutiny, particularly when they are of public interest.
“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest,” Obi stated.
He argued that questions surrounding Tinubu’s educational history, including his primary and secondary schooling, should be addressed openly rather than allowed to remain subjects of prolonged legal disputes.
According to Obi, Nigerians are entitled to “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations” on issues concerning the President’s records, especially where documents relating to his education had previously been presented.
The NDC presidential candidate further warned that unresolved controversies involving the nation’s highest office could send the wrong message to young Nigerians about accountability and ethical leadership.
He said the Presidency ought to demonstrate transparency and integrity, stressing that the credibility of the country’s institutions should take precedence over the personal interests of any individual.
“The nation’s highest office should exemplify integrity, accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership,” Obi said.
He added, “Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual.”
