President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, raising pay by between 30 and 80 per cent across various ranks.

The salary adjustment, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The statement explained that the increment was designed to favour lower-ranking personnel, with the highest percentage increases allocated to junior officers and soldiers.
Under the new arrangement, officers from the rank of General to Colonel will receive a 30 per cent increase in their salaries, while personnel between Colonel and Warrant Officer ranks will enjoy a 50 per cent pay rise.
Soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent.
The Federal Government said the revised salary structure would raise the annual wage bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion.
Tinubu said the salary review was in recognition of the sacrifices made by military personnel in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.
"The men and women who put their lives on the line to keep Nigerians safe deserve adequate support and appreciation," the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving troop welfare and strengthening the military through the provision of modern weapons and advanced technology.
According to him, achieving national development depends largely on a secure environment, adding that the government would continue to deploy all available security assets to safeguard lives and property while urging troops to remain steadfast in defending the nation.
