The incident reportedly occurred in Upemen Community, Owo Local Government Area of the state, where the suspect allegedly used a hot pressing iron on the girl.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, disclosed this on Tuesday during a visit to the child at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where she is receiving treatment.
Osamaye said the ministry intervened after receiving information about the incident and ensured that the girl was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
She explained that the child had already undergone surgery but would require another procedure involving skin grafting as part of her treatment.
“The girl sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. Her father has been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution,” the commissioner said.
Osamaye, who led officials of the ministry to the hospital to assess the child’s condition, said the government remained committed to protecting children from abuse and ensuring that victims received the necessary medical and social support.
She urged parents and guardians to adopt responsible and humane approaches in dealing with children, stressing that no form of discipline should expose a child to serious harm.
The Medical Director of FMC Owo, Dr Adeyinka Aiyeyemi, commended the state government for its intervention and said the girl would need another skin-grafting operation to aid her recovery.
Aiyeyemi also recommended psychological support for the child and her parents to help them cope with the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives from the ‘A’ Division, Owo, responded swiftly after receiving the report and apprehended the suspect.
He said the matter had been transferred to the police gender unit for discreet investigation and further action in accordance with the law.
