The resignation of Gusau and other board members comes following mounting pressure over Nigeria’s recent poor displays in major international football competitions.

Also, it comes barely one month before the NFF’s elective congress, which had initially been scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

However, the National Sports Commission (NSC) had already moved to stop the electoral process and was considering setting up a normalisation committee to run Nigerian football and prepare the ground for a fresh election.

The development follows weeks of intense criticism of the Gusau-led administration, with stakeholders increasingly questioning its management of the country’s national teams and the broader direction of Nigerian football.

Pressure on Gusau grew no thanks to spates of disappointing results involving Nigeria’s senior and youth national teams.

The pressure got worse after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

After losing to Cameroon 1-0 in the 2026 WAFCON quarterfinal, the Super Falcons had the opportunity to reach the World Cup via the Intercontinental playoffs.

Unfortunately, the Super Falcons lost 2-1 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the play-in held in Morocco.

The setbacks led to widespread calls for the NFF leadership to step down or make way for a new administration.

The NFF itself had acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, with Gusau inaugurating a fact-finding committee in August to probe the causes of the national teams’ poor performances which was submitted on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it is gathered that Gusau will hold a world press conference today (Thursday) at 12pm.
