Nigeria is Burning – Atiku Knocks Tinubu Over Europe Vacation Amid Hardship, Insecurity

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu for embarking on a three-week trip to Europe, arguing that the worsening economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria require the President’s attention at home.

Atiku made the disclosure in a statement posted on his verified Facebook account and sighted by AFRIPOST, in which he questioned the timing of Tinubu’s foreign trip, particularly as millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with the rising cost of living.

The former Vice President said Nigeria was not facing a constitutional crisis but was suffering from what he described as a “disturbing vacuum of political leadership,” given the challenges confronting citizens.

He cited the high cost of petrol, escalating food prices, unaffordable transport fares and persistent insecurity as issues that, according to him, should compel the President to remain more engaged with developments in the country.

Atiku also raised concerns over the fact that Vice President Kashim Shettima was out of the country on official assignment at the time, describing the President’s decision to travel as difficult to justify under the circumstances.

He said the responsibilities of the presidency went beyond merely exercising constitutional powers, stressing that effective leadership also required knowing when the nation needed the President’s physical presence.

Using a family analogy, Atiku said, “A father may travel when all is well. But when his roof is burning and his family is trapped inside, he does not pick up his suitcase and head for the airport.”

He further accused the administration of becoming detached from the difficulties being experienced by Nigerians, warning that a government unable to appreciate the consequences of its policies would struggle to address them.

Atiku, who is expected to be a major figure in the 2027 political contest, ended his statement with a campaign-style promise, saying, “Tinubu made Nigeria expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again.”
