The attack reportedly occurred shortly after Dr Oyebamiji concluded a political mobilisation and voter education programme in Alajue Ward 2 ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

She was said to have attended the event alongside Princess Bukola Adereti, wife of the APC deputy governorship candidate, Kayode Adereti.

Sources said the convoy came under attack at about 7 p.m. while leaving the venue, with about 15 suspected hoodlums reportedly ambushing the vehicles.

During the attack, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Sekona Branch, sustained serious head injuries, while Dr Oyebamiji and Princess Adereti escaped unhurt.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Ede South Local Government, Kolawole Salami, condemned the attack and urged security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Salami said the incident occurred around the Alajue and Sekona Garage axis as the APC campaign team was returning from the political engagement in Alajue, Ede.

He alleged that the assailants were loyalists of the Accord Party and called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

"The perpetrators of this attack must be identified and brought to justice in accordance with the law," he said.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from Dr Oyebamiji were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to a text message sent to her before the report was filed.
