Police Summon VeryDarkMan Over Alleged Claims Against Officers at NBA Conference

The Nigeria Police Force has invited social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to provide evidence backing allegations he made against police personnel during a Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt.

Otse reportedly made the claims on Tuesday while participating as a panelist at the 66th Annual General Conference of the NBA.

During the session, the activist alleged that some police officers stationed at checkpoints on major highways pass information about travellers to kidnappers and bandits.

He further claimed that such information was being used by criminal groups to identify potential victims and facilitate ransom kidnappings across the country.

The allegation has since drawn a response from the police, who rejected the claim and challenged the social media personality to substantiate it.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said personnel deployed to checkpoints and other strategic locations were assigned to prevent crime, identify threats and protect members of the public.

The police spokesman maintained that officers working at such locations regularly confront the same criminal elements accused of receiving information from them.

The statement said the force was therefore inviting Otse to submit any evidence in his possession, particularly proof that officers identify wealthy travellers and subsequently pass their details to kidnappers.

According to the police, any credible evidence presented by the activist would be treated seriously and subjected to investigation.

The force also urged members of the public who possess information about alleged misconduct by police officers to report through appropriate channels rather than relying solely on public allegations.

The invitation comes amid heightened public concern over kidnapping and other violent crimes on Nigerian highways, with the police facing continued pressure to strengthen security measures and curb criminal activities.

Otse, who has built a large following through his outspoken criticism of government institutions and public figures, has yet to publicly disclose whether he will honour the police invitation.
