The Congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, expressed concern over the safety of media practitioners during the electioneering period and advised members to remain highly security-conscious before, during and after the elections.
The NUJ specifically warned journalists against attending press conferences and official engagements organised at undesignated or unofficial venues, stressing that such caution was necessary to safeguard their personal safety.
It also admonished journalists to remain objective, professional and non-partisan in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
On political campaigns, the union appealed to politicians and other political actors to embrace issue-based campaigns devoid of blackmail, character assassination and cyberbullying. GetLanguage Courses
The Congress further urged political parties and their candidates to make use of the NUJ Press Centre for media briefings and press conferences as electioneering activities gather momentum.
The union also raised concern over the increasing spread of fake news, misinformation and unverified content, particularly across social media platforms.
It called for effective enforcement of existing cyber laws against the dissemination of false information capable of causing public panic, social unrest and security breaches.
On security, the NUJ urged security agencies to develop robust and proactive operational strategies to address public safety concerns throughout the electioneering and election periods.
The union also advised proprietors of media organisations to provide comprehensive insurance coverage for journalists deployed to cover political campaigns and elections.
According to the Congress, adequate insurance protection would help guarantee the safety and peace of mind of journalists undertaking potentially hazardous election-related assignments.
The communiqué was signed by the NUJ Oyo State Council Secretary, Temidayo Adu, on behalf of the Congress.
