He Has No Plan for Nigeria — Datti On Why He Left Obi

Former Labour Party presidential running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has explained his decision to distance himself from Peter Obi, saying the former Anambra State governor has yet to present a clear plan for Nigeria.

Datti was Obi’s running mate during the Labour Party’s campaign in the 2023 presidential election.

Obi later left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as part of efforts to build a platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

However, Datti said he could not continue backing Obi or support the ADC presidential project simply because of his previous political relationship with the former presidential candidate.

Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, Datti said his decision was based on what he described as the absence of a convincing blueprint for governing Nigeria.

He maintained that his past support for Obi was not in doubt, stressing that he had worked extensively to advance their joint presidential campaign in 2023.

According to him, he had previously told Obi that a presidential bid required more than political popularity and should be supported by a clear and workable programme for the country.

Datti also rejected the suggestion that Obi had personally abandoned him, explaining that he was the one who chose to leave after becoming dissatisfied with the direction of the political project.

He said he still respected Obi and acknowledged the efforts they made together during the 2023 election, but disagreed with some of the political decisions taken since then.

Datti further said he would not deliberately promote Obi, Atiku Abubakar or other opposition figures at the expense of what he considers fairness to President Bola Tinubu.

His position comes as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition politicians exploring different platforms and alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate said political loyalty should not prevent individuals from demanding clear ideas and practical solutions from those seeking to lead Nigeria.
