The NECO Registrar, Prof Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this on Thursday at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, during a briefing on the outcome of the examination conducted earlier this year.
Wushishi said 1,371,992 candidates sat for the examination, representing 678,903 males and 693,089 females, out of the 1,378,048 candidates who registered for the exercise.
He explained that while 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, obtained five credits and above irrespective of English and Mathematics, 804,948 candidates, or 58.67 per cent, met the benchmark when the two subjects were included.
The examination was conducted from June 15 to September 4 in the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory and six countries comprising Benin Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Niger Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Saudi Arabia.
According to the registrar, the results became available 63 days after the examination ended, following the completion of marking, verification and other quality-assurance procedures.
He described the 2026 examination as a demanding exercise for the council.
Wushishi further disclosed that 1,406 candidates were involved in examination malpractice, representing a 64.74 per cent decline from the 3,878 cases recorded during the 2025 examination.
The NECO boss also said 1,334 candidates with special needs took part in the examination, while directing candidates to check their results online with their examination registration numbers.
He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to maintaining the credibility of its examinations and ensuring that certificates issued reflect candidates’ genuine academic performance.
