Obi made the pledge on Saturday at a town hall meeting with members and supporters of the NDC in Kaduna State, where he also called on political aspirants to avoid making promises they would be unable to fulfil if elected.

The former Anambra State governor said the proposed punishment would apply to drug importers regardless of their social or political status, stressing that the activities of drug traffickers had contributed to the loss of many Nigerian youths.

Obi said, “If I assume office as President of Nigeria, anybody importing hard drugs will face a life sentence. Our youths have died a lot because of hard drugs.”

He urged political parties and their candidates to focus their campaigns on addressing the challenges confronting Nigerians rather than making unrealistic promises.

The NDC candidate also pledged that, if elected, he would spend his annual holidays in Nigeria instead of travelling abroad.

According to him, the President should use such periods to interact with Nigerians across the country, particularly communities affected by insecurity and other socio-economic challenges.

Obi further urged political leaders to maintain closer contact with the people and make their policies responsive to the problems confronting citizens.
