Oni, a prominent Labour Party figure in the state, was received into the APC in Ibadan on Wednesday by the state chairman, Chief Moses Adeyemo; the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli; and other leaders, including Hon Remi Oseni, the APC candidate for Oyo South Senatorial District.
Addressing the gathering, Oni said he played a key role in the alliance that supported Governor Seyi Makinde during the 2023 election but expressed regret over the outcome, alleging that the governor failed to fulfil agreements reached with members of the Labour Party despite the risks they took to support him.
Oni said the strength of the Obedient Movement was evident in the support it mobilised for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in 2023, adding that the same energy would now be deployed in support of APC candidates.
“Everyone out there appreciates the fact that our Obedient Movement is strong and virile going by what we were able to do for the LP presidential candidate in 2023, Mr Peter Obi, despite all odds, but this time round, our efforts will be channelled in the cause of all APC candidates including President Bola Tinubu, Sen. Sarafadeen Alli, Hon. Remi Oseni and all others,” he said.
He said the group would immediately begin mobilisation and sensitisation across the state, adding that those at the event represented only a fraction of the Obedient Movement’s membership across the 33 local government areas.
“We are not here for the fun of it. We are poised to add value and our impact shall be greatly felt in the areas of mobilisation and sensitisation of voters in favour of the APC,” Oni said.
In his remarks, Alli commended Oni and other promoters of the Obedient Movement for joining the APC, saying the party was capable of accommodating people across different sections of society for leadership, democratic development and good governance.
Alli also promised that his administration, if elected in 2027, would prioritise youth participation, workers’ welfare and the interests of pensioners and other residents.
He said his deputy governorship candidate, Adesoji Adedeji, would be given the opportunity to work in the interest of young people, noting that the youth population would play an active role in his administration.
Alli further said his experience and knowledge of Oyo State would help his administration pursue what he described as a turnaround of the state, with the goal of placing Oyo among the top three states in the country.
APC leaders at the event included Rt. Hon. Asimiyu Niran Alarape, Alhaji Taofeek Lamidi, Hon. Fatai Adesina, Dr Adekemi Opatunde, Hon. Yemi Aderibigbe, Hon. Sola Ogunbode, Olawale Sadare, Hon. Tunde Oloyede, Alhaji Shina Alabi, Hon. Sunday Aborisade, Hon. Tunde Elegbede and Comrade Olalekan Oladejo.
