Trump Proposes Renaming Strait of Hormuz After Himself

US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to intensify.

Trump made the unusual proposal on Wednesday while claiming that the strategically vital waterway is now under American control.

In a social media post, the US president asked whether the Strait of Hormuz should instead be called the “TRUMP STRAIT”.

He added that, like the United States itself, the waterway would be “hotter” than ever under the proposed name.

Trump’s remarks came as fighting between the US and Iran entered another tense phase. Tehran, however, has rejected Washington’s claim that American forces control the strait.

The waterway has emerged as one of the most sensitive points in the conflict because of its importance to global oil shipments.

The latest confrontation followed US attacks on Iranian targets on Tuesday. Iranian officials said one of the strikes hit a residential building in Kuhestak, a city in Sirik County.

According to Iranian authorities, the building was hosting a wedding when it was struck. At least four people, including two children, were reportedly killed.

Details of the reported attack remain contested, with accounts from the two sides differing over what happened.

Iran later responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US-linked sites in several parts of the region.

The exchange has intensified fears that further fighting could disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and put additional pressure on global energy markets.

Washington has maintained that it wants commercial vessels to continue using the waterway safely. Iran, on the other hand, has insisted that it retains control of the strategic passage.

Maritime traffic through the strait has already fallen sharply compared with levels recorded before the latest conflict.

The uncertainty has also affected oil markets. Crude prices have risen as traders assess the possibility of a prolonged disruption to one of the world's most important energy corridors.

Saudi Arabia has also accused Iran of attacking an oil tanker in the region. Two people were reportedly killed in the incident.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, known as UKMTO, has continued to issue alerts about incidents involving vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz.

With military confrontations continuing, the strait remains at the centre of international concern.

Any sustained disruption could have consequences far beyond the Middle East, particularly for oil supplies, shipping costs and energy prices worldwide.
