Varsity Expels 12 Students, Rusticates Five Over Cultism, Robbery, Other Offences

The Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, has expelled 12 students over offences including cult-related activities, armed robbery, criminal conspiracy and drug abuse.

The university also sanctioned 10 other students, with five rusticated for offences involving cyberbullying and attempted sexual assault, while another five received warning letters.

The disciplinary measures followed the review of the 20th report of the university’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee by Vice-Chancellor Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel. The sanctions took immediate effect.

FUD announced the decisions in a statement issued on Saturday by its Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahya.

According to the university, the expelled students were found culpable of serious offences ranging from criminal conspiracy and armed robbery to phone theft, cult-related activities and drug abuse on campus.

The institution said the five students placed on rustication were sanctioned over cyberbullying and attempted sexual assault. Four of them will remain rusticated for two semesters, while the fifth will serve a one-semester sanction.

Five other students were issued warning letters for offences committed both on and off campus.

The university identified the offences in that category as drug abuse, attempted sexual assault and cyberbullying.

The latest disciplinary action came weeks after FUD sought police assistance over emerging cult-related activities and other anti-social behaviour among some students.

On August 13, the university management visited the Jigawa State Police Command in Dutse and raised concerns over the development with Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala.

Yahya said the university had adopted a firm position against conduct capable of undermining campus safety and the institution’s reputation.

“FUD maintains zero tolerance for criminality, cultism, drug abuse and harassment of any form,” the statement said.

The university urged students to comply with its rules and remain law-abiding, stressing that discipline was necessary to sustain a safe environment for learning and character development.

FUD also called on parents and guardians to guide their children and wards away from activities that could jeopardise their education and future.
