What Wike Told Tinubu’s Campaign Council Chiefs At Abuja Inauguration Today

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has told coordinators of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign to prove their effectiveness by delivering votes in their respective states, warning that a nationwide victory would not excuse poor performance in individual states.

Wike gave the charge on Wednesday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said campaign coordinators must take responsibility for electoral outcomes in their assigned areas rather than rely on their positions in the council or celebrate an overall national victory despite losing in their respective states.

Using Lagos State as an example, the former Rivers State governor said Tinubu’s supporters must work to secure a strong electoral showing in the state instead of relying solely on the prospect of winning nationally.

Wike, who was assigned to coordinate Tinubu’s campaign in Rivers State and the FCT, expressed confidence that both areas would deliver substantial votes for the president in the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

He said his responsibility was clear, pledging to mobilise support for Tinubu in the two territories under his supervision.

The minister also challenged political actors in the FCT to identify areas where the Tinubu administration had failed to make an impact, arguing that government projects and interventions should provide campaign officials with reasons to convince voters.

Wike further defended his decision to support Tinubu despite remaining a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), arguing that party affiliation should not prevent politicians from acknowledging policies and achievements they consider beneficial to the country.

He maintained that opposition parties could criticise the government’s shortcomings without automatically dismissing every action taken by the ruling party.

The FCT minister also praised Tinubu for what he described as his willingness to confront longstanding national challenges, particularly the proposed establishment of state police.

He expressed optimism that the proposal would receive legislative approval in the coming months, noting that previous administrations had recognised the need for state police but failed to establish the system.

Wike said the proposed reform could strengthen efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

He also defended the inclusion of opposition politicians in Tinubu’s campaign council, saying the president had indicated that individuals outside the APC who could contribute to his re-election bid should be accommodated.

The minister further asserted his leadership position within the PDP, declaring that there was no competing leader of the opposition party and that he spoke on its behalf.

His remarks placed emphasis on the need for campaign coordinators to demonstrate measurable electoral results while defending his cross-party support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
