Why We May Still Drop Shortlisted Candidates Before Training – Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service has warned applicants who made its recruitment shortlist that appearing on the list does not guarantee employment, as further checks must be completed before they can proceed to training.

The clarification came amid complaints from some shortlisted candidates who said they had completed the Computer-Based Test, physical assessment and initial verification but were still waiting for invitations to the training programme.

The service’s spokesman, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, said the recruitment exercise remained subject to additional screening, stressing that only applicants who satisfy all the conditions would be cleared for training.

He explained that candidates could be disqualified because of issues such as exceeding the stipulated age limit, discrepancies in academic records, forged documents, medical conditions or failing drug screening.

Maiwada said the purpose of the screening was to ensure that only qualified applicants progressed to the next stage, adding that the Customs Service would not commit public funds to training candidates who had already failed basic eligibility checks.

He further noted that receiving an invitation to the training college would still not confer the status of a Customs officer on any applicant.

According to him, trainees must complete the programme successfully, pass the required examinations and satisfy the service’s standards on academic performance, character and physical fitness before they can be commissioned.

The recruitment exercise, which commenced in December 2024, was designed to fill 3,927 vacancies across three cadres.

The service received 573,680 applications but shortlisted 3,852 candidates after various stages of the selection process.

The shortlisted applicants comprise 1,275 Superintendents, 367 Inspectors and 2,210 Customs Assistants, with basic training scheduled to begin on October 9, 2026, at the Customs Training College.
