Polyibadan Governing Council Lists Achievements, Trains Staff on Due Process, Corporate Governance

Ibadan. 

In a bid to ensure a continuous learning process, The Governing Council of The Polytechnic, Ibadan has retrained managements, and staff of the institution on the significance and the intricacies of due process and corporate governance.

The 14 - man council led by Prof. Kunle Akinyemi who made this initiative in a 2 in 1 event also listed her achievements and how it has lifted the institution to an enviable standard with emphasis on improved staff welfarism, students welfarism, academic excellence, commissioning and construction of physical infrastructural projects, successful international conferences, and incorporation of the newly introduced Open Distance age flexible E-learning. 

In his remark during the programme held at CIBN Hall, Middlebelt campus on Wednesday, The Chairman Governing Council, Prof. Kunle Akinyemi claimed the reason for the programme is to let people know the institution is proud of the state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde who has been doing a wonderful job. 

"So many construction works are going on. A lot of projects are doing well. People need to know we're a world class institution.

"We want to be the best Polytechnic in Africa. We are already one of the best. We don't want to be just one of the best in Africa but also in Nigeria. We want to fit in for whatever parameters used for ranking.

"These days university graduates are riding motorbikes in the street and doing menial jobs. The Polytechnic, system will equip students with Skill-set that can help make a living. Being skillful is better than being certificated.

"The challenges are funding is not adequate, our facilities is not enough. There's need to move in time. This is a global trend. We need the most current technologies, modern equipments to help our students learn. We don't go on strike here." 

Speaking on claims of corruption in Nigeria institutions, Prof. Akinyemi noted that the system of the Polytechnic, Ibadan does not really give way for corruption in the institution. 

"It's not easy to be corrupt because the management and council don't touch the money. We have someone in charge who ensure we are not tempted.

"There's no room for corruption in our institution. This system should also be employed. People of integrity should be put in place. I think the antidote is to ensure we preach integrity to students, to members of staff and everyone". He claimed.

The Rector, Prof. Kazeem Adebiyi while giving his speech maintained that the governing council team is a milestone in the history of the  Polytechnic, Ibadan.

The Rector added that training and retraining should be a very important part of human life.

"Learning is dynamic, as need to update our learning so as to be online with the standard practice. We need to update ourselves on the importance of due process so that we can be one of the best.

"We have invited a professional, the Director General, Due Process Office of the Oyo State government to teach our members of staff on the tenets of due process. 

"What is worth doing is worth doing well, no matter what, we need to update ourselves. We're citadel of learning, we want to be the best not only in Nigeria, Africa and the whole world.

He admonished the members of staff to take whatever they are doing with good sense of communication. adding that they are leaders who need to lead by example.

Speaking on cases of Cultism, he stressed that Cultism is a societal problem. He noted that the Polytechnic, Ibadan happened to be one of the peaceful institutions. He added that institution is putting high priority of modalities in place, to ensure the spill over of the Society does not affect the smooth running of the institution.

He however appreciated members of staff to keep up the good work by raising the bar of the institution.

The Keynote Speaker, Mrs. Tara Adefowope who doubles as the Director General, Due Process Office, Oyo State Government, reveals the importance of trust, quality, respect and accountability in corporate governance.

Adefowope added that the respect for laws, regulations, and code of ethics is very important for a working organization structure.

Speaking to newsmen on the initiative she stated that the idea is to talk about due process and how things can be done better in a system.

"One of the things we are trying to cascade is to build capacity and make people understand why we do what we do.

"Knowing is half the battle won. When you're able to identify what your issues are. You all get to know what is required of you. We need to engage and put the pictures in place. Rome is not built in a day and there is always room for improvement." 

Comr. Biodun Abegunde, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of The Polytechnic, Ibadan speaking on the need for retraining of senior staffs applauded the government and the management for creating the Ẹ - learning programme which has provided opportunity for working class persons to learn at their flexibility. 

He added that cultism is a nationwide societal problem that occur in all institution. He further stressed that Amotekun has come to the system of which he firmly believe there is going to be an improved security condition in the institution.
