The Director General of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, (DAWN Commission), Hon. Seye Oyeleye has warned Nigerians against political apathy, tribalism and favoritism in selecting their next set of leaders in the coming 2023 general elections.
Oyeleye who made this assertion while delivering a Keynote address at the 2022 Tunde Oshobi Public Forum organized by Junior Chamber International, University of Ibadan chapter on Wednesday maintained that the act of people's negligence to turning up and taking active step in choosing their leaders is one of the endemic Nigerians need to revisit.
He stressed that Nigeria strongest resource is the people adding that 70% of the 18 million registered voters on Nigeria emanates from the youth populace.
"We have seen indications of the strength and power of the youth. Young people should be given opportunity to use their digitalized ideas to bring their own country forward.
"The youth should be allowed to vote their preferred candidate.
Only about 34% of the registered voters voted in 2019, while 32% of the total registered voters voted in 2015.
"We as people, the youth in particular should practice, advocate and engage in a peaceful conduct during the election." He said.
Speaking on democracy. Oyeleye lauded the Buhari led administration for implementing the new Electoral act which has given more strength to credible, free and fair election in the country.
He further warned Nigerians to shun favoritism, religious affiliation, nepotism and tribalism among parameters for selecting their preferred candidate in the next election at the national, state and sub - national level.
He maintained that 2023 is a myth to put Nigeria back on the lane adding that Nigerians should ensure they elect leaders who are willing to prioritize contributing to curbing insecurity, providing quality education, creating infrastructural development.
He however enjoined the youth to imbibe the spirit of volunteering and not just waiting for paid employment.
National President, Junior Chamber International, Nigeria, (JCIN), JCI Ambassador Olawale Bakare in his speech applauded University of Ibadan JayCees for pulling giant stride despite the lingering ASUU strike.
He maintained that organizing such event is to revisit what could be the solution to Nigeria's problem and it future. He categorically welcome all JayCees who have come to Ibadan to attend the ongoing National Convention scheduled to hold between 12th of October, to 16th of October, 2022.
