You’re Achievers - Oyo Commissioner, Olatunbosun Lauds Ibadan Poly Mass Comm 2004 Set for Giving Back to Alma Mater

The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Wasiu Olatunbosun has applauded the 2003/04 set of the Department of Mass Communication, The Polytechnic for giving back to their alma mater. 

Olatunbosun who described the set as the “Set of Achievers” made this known while speaking as a special guest of honor at the official commissioning of a solar power system donated to the department. This donation is a part of the set’s plans for the commemoration of the 20th reunion anniversary. 

He lauded the President of the set, Prince Rotimi Wusu for his leadership prowess. The Commissioner who doubles as a former lecturer of the department noted that Prince Wusu has been showcasing his wonderful leadership trait since he was still his school.

He further appealed to the set to propagate the spirit of giving back to their institution of learning among other sets and help preach the essence of reuniting. He added that Polytechnic education is a great system noting that the institution has breed many icons making exploit in Nigeria and beyond.

The acting Rector of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr. Taiwo Lasisi in his address noted that the set of the department has given a solution to a major problem the institution is facing which is power supply.

He further expressed joyful gratitude towards the set’s intitiative to give back to the school.

“This gift is given to the management not to Mass Communication alone, we hope that other sets from other departments can also key into this and give back to the management” He said.

In his welcome address, The Head of Department, Mass communication, Dr. Olusoji Olatunji expressed his profound appreciation to the set for giving back to their source.

He added that the 20th reunion anniversary is not just a party but an avenue to reignite memories and impact in the coming generation.

"We are proud to celebrate this anniversary not just with memories, but with a project that reflects their values and commitment to a greener future,"

"This solar system symbolizes your dedication to leadership and responsibility, on campus ."he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, The President for the Asociation of Student Communicators (ASCOM) 2003/04 Set, Class of Presidents, Prince Rotimi Wusu reflected on his journey from two decades ago when he first served as president of the Association. 

He highlighted the unique distinction of the set, codenamed the "Class of Presidents," which included leaders from various associations and notably produced the Second SUG president from the Mass Communication Department.

Mr. Wusu emphasized the significance of their recent reunion, particularly the commissioning of solar energy solutions. He also pointed out the challenges they faced during their time at the institution, notably the lack of reliable electricity, which hindered effective communication work. To address this, they initiated a solar electricity project designed to provide uninterrupted power, ensuring the department can thrive.

He then encouraged current students to seize the opportunities available to them, which he and his peers did not have. With their digital fluency as internet natives, he urged them to leverage social media to amplify their voices and drive change. 

“Transform the narrative, create meaningful changes in The Polytechnic and within the Mass Communication Department. Strive for excellence, absorb all you can in school, and let your light shine beyond these walls." He advised.

The celebration included the commissioning of a new 3.15 KWP solar system installation aimed at reducing the campus's carbon footprint while promoting renewable energy usage among students and faculty.

In their collective goodwill messages, the Deputy Rector of the institution, Mrs. Salawu, the Registrar of the Institution, the Dean of Faculty of Buisness and Communication studies, FBCS, Dr. Kehinde Faniyi, and a retired senior lecturer of department, Mr. Rotimi Bolarinwa also lauded the set. 

Also in attendance at the anniversary were Alumni, current students, Management Staff , Departmental Lecturers, Students and guests.

The event concluded with a reception, allowing attendees to connect and share their experiences, reinforcing the bonds formed over the years. The ASCOM Class of Presidents looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence and service in the years to come.
